Digital Subscriber Line (DSL), also known as Digital Subscriber Loop, Internet Services provide digital data transmission via local telephone network lines. The typical data transfer rate of this type of service ranges between 128kbs to 24,000kbs. It was designed to transfer both Audio and Video concurrently through copper telephone lines in order to create a faster connection and faster transfer speeds.
The most common form of DSL is Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line, which uses the same phone line to transfer both voice and data by transferring data at frequencies that can not be heard by the human ear. A micro filter is used to separate the two signals. Unfortunately, the upstream data rate is slower than the downstream data rate and in order for it to function correctly you have to be located within 5 kilometers of the phone company for it to work. Once the signal reaches the phone companies central location, the signal is stripped off and routed through a normal Internet connection. Although this type of connection allows faster download speeds it is not recommended for servers or other systems that require a large amount of bandwidth.
Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line (SDSL) is used as an Internet connection that allows the user to have the same data transfer rate on both ends and the speed range is from 72kbs to 2320kbs. Unlike ASDL, this type of service can not run concurrently on the same line with a voice service. Instead it uses a pair of copper wires for signal transfer thus the downstream data rate is the same as the upstream data rate. Again, the main drawback is that you must be within 3kilometers of the phone company. It is also significantly higher in price.
Even though many small businesses have T1 capabilities, they choose to use Digital Subscriber Line because of the difference in price. DSL has a cost of around $35.00 a month whereas a T1 connection can cost as much as $300-$400 a month if you are in a metro area that supports it. It can go as high $1,000 a month if you are in a rural area that does not have a local host. At these prices DSL is the better option.
Digital Subscriber Line can be a viable solution to your Internet connection needs. It is an affordable way to enjoy a higher Internet connection speed when broadband is not available to you. It should be noted that this service is not available in all areas so make sure you check with your phone company to make sure it is available in your area.
